A Friendly Sip of Coffee for Seniors: Can It Prevent Dementia?

While enjoying Colombian coffee at a café in South Kolkata, we noticed a message on the wall claiming that coffee drinking could prevent dementia and Alzheimer's. Fascinated by the claim, we decided to conduct our own research. Here's what three major scientific studies actually reveal.

Overview

As we were enjoying Colombian coffee in a posh café in South Kolkata, we noticed a message on the wall that suggested coffee drinking could prevent dementia and Alzheimer's.

Because we were fascinated, we made the decision to conduct some independent research to determine whether it is true. The results are summarized in the sections that follow.

Research Findings

We reviewed three major peer-reviewed studies that examined the relationship between coffee consumption and cognitive decline in seniors.

1

Coffee Consumption & Risk of Cognitive Decline/Dementia

Published in: Nutrition — Volume 32, Issue 6, June 2016, Pages 628-636
Study type: Systematic Review & Meta-Analysis of Prospective Cohort Studies

According to the conclusion of a study titled "Habitual coffee consumption and risk of cognitive decline/dementia: A systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies," increased coffee consumption may be linked to a lower risk of Alzheimer's disease.

Key Caveat

However, it was stated that in order to ascertain whether coffee consumption is linked to dementia or cognitive decline, randomized controlled trials or carefully planned cohort studies are required.

2

Caffeine, Tea, and Coffee Consumption for Late-Life Cognitive Protection

Published in: The Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging — March 2015, Volume 19, Issue 3, pp. 313–328
Study type: Systematic Review

According to this systematic review, preventing or delaying the onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and slowing its progression are becoming essential due to the very limited therapeutic value of medications currently used in the treatment of dementia and AD.

The most well-known psychoactive stimulant among diet-related factors is coffee, which raises arousal and alertness and enhances cognitive function. Coffee, tea, and caffeine consumption, as well as greater plasma caffeine levels, may be protective against cognitive decline or impairment, according to research on some long-term impacts on brain function.

Main Takeaway

Higher plasma caffeine levels from coffee and tea consumption may offer protective benefits against cognitive decline — though the mechanism and optimal dosage require further study.

3

Coffee Consumption & Incident Risk of Disabling Dementia in Elderly Japanese

Published in: Journal of Alzheimer's Disease — Vol. 50, No. 2, pp. 491-500, 2016
Study name: The Ohsaki Cohort 2006 Study

This study examined the relationship between coffee consumption and incident risk of dementia in an elderly Japanese population. The baseline survey was completed in 2006 by 23,091 residents of Ohsaki City, northeastern Japan, who were at least 65 years old.

Overall, it was found that drinking coffee was strongly linked to a decreased risk of incident dementia. Additionally, among women, non-drinkers, and non-smokers, this strong unfavorable connection was more pronounced. There is a strong correlation between coffee drinking and a decreased incidence of incident dementia.

Main Takeaway

In a cohort of over 23,000 elderly Japanese adults, coffee drinking showed a strong protective association against disabling dementia — particularly among women, non-drinkers, and non-smokers.

In Conclusion

The aforementioned studies have not shown any solid proof that coffee drinking lessens the crippling effects of memory loss conditions on a person, including older citizens.

Nonetheless, the results clearly show that it provides protection against dementia and cognitive deterioration. Before a conclusion can be reached, more research in this area is required.

⚠️ Important Note: It should be mentioned that the Indian population was not included in any of the research articles we consulted. Who knows — the outcomes might then be very different for Indian seniors.

Seniors with hypertension, cardiac conditions, sleep disorders, anxiety, or gastrointestinal issues should consult their doctor before increasing coffee consumption. The research presented here shows association, not causation.
